Meet the Teacher and our Philosophy

Meet the Teacher:
Hi!  My name is Lacey Mecham and I’m excited that you are interested in The Little Red Preschool.  I have wanted to be a teacher as long as I can remember.  I have taught preschool in my home in Lehi for the nine eleven years.  Then in March of of 2013 our family moved to Santaquin where I resumed my in home preschool. Before that I taught in Alpine School District in there title one preschool.
I have 5 wonderful kids.  I have chosen to teach preschool so that I can be home, while still having the opportunity to teach and influence children.  I believe children need a rich learning environment with many learning experiences to excel in school.  I’m anxious to provide such opportunities for your child.

I love teaching, I love children's enthusiastic approach to learning and watching their eyes light up with excitement!  It is so rewarding.

Philosophy:
Little Red Preschool is based upon the belief that young children learn best in a safe, nurturing environment, which provides opportunities for children to learn and develop through activities which are age and individually appropriate.  I believe that preschool age is the formative developmental time for children.  The program provides a rich environment that promotes children’s active exploration in all areas of development:  physical, emotional, social and cognitive.  Curriculum is integrated into the classroom through a thematic approach whereby learning activities are concrete, real, and relevant.  Learning is an interactive process between the teachers and the children.  The environment and activities are age appropriate and consider the different needs, interests, and developmental levels of individual children.   Children have opportunities to play and work with other children; make choices and encounter consequences; and negotiate social conflicts using appropriate language.  They need to begin to learn that their actions affect others.  Learning to function in a classroom environment is also a preschool focus.  Students need to learn to follow directions, work and clean together, listen and participate, and sit during lessons.  Large and fine motor skills need to be fine-tuned at this time.  I have a strong believe that new skills should be learned correctly, rather than struggling to correct them in later years.  Learning should be fun and active with music, movement and enthusiasm!

Learning should be fun!  I am dedicated to fun learning and to a positive preschool experience for you and your child.  I look forward to a fun, exciting year!

"TINKER TIME" & Fine Motor Skills

One thing we really focus on at preschool is our fine motor skills. These are important to develop as they lead to important writing skills. We do many activities to promote practice. I wanted to highlight a few for you.
For the first 10-15 minutes of the day, the kids have 'Tinker Tray time' During this time, the kids have a tray assigned to them each day. WIth an independent activity for them to complete. After which, they clean it up then come and join me and the other children at circle time. The tinker tray activities vary but they include math practice, literacy review, or fine motor activities. Here are some pictures to give you a better idea.

Spooning beads into baby food jars. Each baby food jar has a line drawn on it. Your child is to fill it exactly to the line with out going over or spilling the beans. Very tricky! This works with coordination along with fine motor skills.

Here we get to "Tinker" with a real Hammer, safety Goggles and nails. She is working on hamming the nails into the wood.

We use this pocket chart to review matching skills, sequencing skills and many more. They feel so important placing things into the pocket chart. This day the children were working on ordering the apples small, medium, and largetransferring pompoms from a bowl onto a plate using plastic tweezers. This works on one to one correspondence and also works those fine motor muscles!

One of our Trays is practicing counting. They place one marble on one dot until all the dots are covered. This helps with one to one correspondence.

"Tinkering" with strings and wood beads onto a shoelace. Lacing is a great fine motor activity and really develops that tripod grip we use for writing.
Try Tinkering with Unifix cubes. This really gets their little fingers working connecting the cubes. We'll also be working on making patterns with these later.
This is a fun 'nuts & bolts' activity. You match the bolt to the nuts (same shape) and screw the nut onto the bolt. An EXCELLENT fine motor activity
